China has been an economic powerhouse for a few decades now. As recently as 2011, economic data show they make the vast majority of personal computers, air conditioners, solar cells and mobile phones that are produced in the world. Of course, no one needs economic data to realize this. Just look at the label on over half the things you buy. China has also been gradually opening up as a society. Only Chinese films used to be shown in movie theaters in this country of well over a billion people. This has been changing recently as the number of theaters there has jumped by ten times in the last decade and a half. As one sign of how culturally isolated the Chinese had been for so long, the original three Star Wars movies were only just shown there this June 16.
Some may have downloaded pirated copies of the movies, but this is the first time anyone living in China has seen them on the big screen. The reaction was somewhat mixed but overall positive. Keith Mann reports that it got a rating of 8.3 out of 10 from viewers as well as tens of thousands of comments. Some were blown away by how good the special effects were for 1977. Presumably, it was the original copies of the original movies shown, therefore, and not the 1997 remakes with a few updated scenes. It is amazing to think that over a billion people were deprived of the awesomeness that is the original Star Wars trilogy for so long.
Forest Whitaker is in talks to join a couple of franchises. One of the movies he is in talks of joining is Star Wars: Rogue One, the anthology film to accompany the trilogy. He is also in talks for appearing in the new Crow Reboot. There is no telling what role he is going to play. A couple of characters that he could play in the reboot is the Detective that helped Brandon Lee’s character, or Top Dollar’s right hand man according to Bloomberg.
The Crow is going to start filming before Rogue One. If Forest Whitaker accepts both roles, he is going to be very busy for the coming months. The Force Awakens is scheduled to end 2015 in both IMAX and regular cinemas. The Crow has no official release date. Another thing that is worth noting is that the upcoming trilogy does not have the 3 year waiting window between films that the original trilogy as well as the prequel has. In this case, fans will be satisfied for years to come.
Among the many genres and franchises that are making big comebacks in this decade are comic book movies, Star Wars movies, and Star Trek if you may. Star Wars: Rebels is finishing off its first season. Chris Weitz is currently revising the script for the first Star Wars spin-off.
When it comes to the spin-off, according to Chris Weitz, the fans of the upcoming standalone film can expect everything. He is dedicated to making the best possible version of the movie. However, there is a rather concerning remark that he has made. The Radiology Business suggests he has stated that he tries not to read the story because he does not see how that could help him. For one thing, when you read over your work, there are ways that you can revise your work in order for it to make more sense. In that case, reading your work can help bring it to its best possible form.
However, Chris Weitz has stated that he is a fan so that could be a comforting thing to hear for people that want Star Wars to return to form.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2015 with the first spinoff to be released a year later.
